THIS WINTER, ESCAPE TO FLORIDA'S CULTURAL CAPITAL

(2022 - Winter Issue)

Writer: SABRINA PIRILLO

A softer side of Florida sits along the southeast coast in The Palm Beaches—encompassed by sunshine and a rejuvenating Atlantic breeze drifting across 75 kilometres of pristine coastline and 39 unique cities and towns. The weather averages 25 degrees Celsius year-round, making it ideal for the whole family to enjoy outdoor festivals and events, especially during the winter months.

ART-FILLED ADVENTURES

Enjoy fewer crowds in the palm-lined streets of West Palm Beach. Tropical energy pulses through the vibrant neighbourhoods as art enthusiasts explore abundant cultural venues. Visit the Norton Museum of Art for the fabulous exhibit, A Personal View on High Fashion & Street Style: Photographs from the Nicola Erni Collection, 1930s to Now until February or meander through the museum’s wild side in the subtropical sculpture garden.

A SYMPHONY OF SKILL

Music lovers rejoice with an orchestra of sounds echoing from The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. View the Palm Beach Symphony and enjoy world-class operas performed by the Palm Beach Opera. In January watch a special one-night performance by the songbird who has been regaled as “America’s favourite mezzo,” Susan Graham; and, in February prepare for Mozart’s comedy opera, Così Fan Tutte.

A MEMORABLE INSTITUTION

Winter walking tours are the best way to immerse in the local history, landmarks and cultural institutions. At the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, step inside the 9,300-square-metre Gilded Age mansion to see the exhibit, The Story of Whitehall, a fascinating exhibit of Whitehall’s 120th anniversary on display until December. Marvel at other architectural beauties like historic The Breakers Palm Beach, a luxury resort at the heart of “America’s First Resort Destination.”

THEATRICAL AND NATURAL WONDERS

Jupiter is popular for its natural scenery, laid back atmosphere and crystal-clear inlets, but visitors stay for the culture. Nature lovers can experience over 5,000 years of regional history at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum. In January, thespians and theatre lovers can enjoy such performances as the Broadway musical hit Sweet Charity at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS

Famous for its spirited main street, robust arts scene and rich culture, Delray Beach is a sun-kissed seaside village with diverse history. See Florida’s only Japanese cultural museum, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Or tour the Delray Beach Art Trail, which features art galleries, murals and art installations with bistros and bars.

CAMERA READY

In the lap of laid-back luxury, Boca Raton blends natural beauty, relaxation and cultural attractions all-in-one.  For instance, Mizner Park, a bling-worthy high-end shopping district, houses both local boutiques and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. See Art of the Hollywood Backdrop, which features large-scale scenic backdrops from Tinseltown’s Golden Age of Hollywood through January.
