TRAVEL GALLERY - FALL/WINTER 2017

(2017 - Fall/Winter Issue)

Writer: CYNTHIA DAVID

A collection of 1,100 rare clocks from every corner of the world joins an exhibition of stained glass by the greatest American artists of the early 1900s to create a unique new museum in Evanston, Illinois. Museum founder Cameel Halim started the collection as a personal passion in the 1990s. In the Asian exhibit, hear birds flap their wings, open their beaks, shake their tails, ruffle their feathers and jump from perch to perch on the hour. In the East Gallery, view the Cornucopia window by talented glass artist John LaFarge, overshadowed by bitter rival Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose work is also featured. HalimMuseum.org

A new production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It set in Vancouver and filled with Beatles music headlines the city’s 29th annual Bard on the Beach festival, running from June 6 to September 22, 2018. This light-hearted musical alternates with a powerhouse production of Shakespeare’s epic drama Macbeth, another innovative new production, starring leading Canadian actors Ben Carlson, Moya O’Connell and a female-dominated cast in Shakespeare’s exploration of power and greed. The festival has also commissioned a modern take on Lysistrata, an outrageous comedy first staged in 411 BC. bardonthebeach.org.

Three giants of Renaissance art are on display this fall at the National Gallery in London. Eight masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti and Raffaello Santi (Raphael) show how the trio were keenly aware of each other’s work with their revolutionary approach to art around 1500. The centrepiece of the free display is The Virgin and Child with the infant St. John, also known as the Taddei Tondo (1504–05), the only marble sculpture by Michelangelo in the U.K. nationalgallery.org.uk
