SPLENDOUR ON THE GULF OF MEXICO

(2017 - Winter Issue)

Writer: STEVE WINSTON

On Florida’s southwest coast, The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel features tropical islands, nature at its most beautiful and the historic town of Fort Myers.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands exude exotic tropical beauty, while Cabbage Key, a little island in the Gulf of Mexico, is known for one of Florida’s funkiest restaurants, on the way to which you may be accompanied by frolicking dolphins.

Beautiful beaches in the area include Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel/Captiva beaches, Lovers Key State Park and Cayo Costa State Park. Splash in the warm Gulf waters, where beaches are lined with little coves and inlets, perfect for exploring by kayak, paddleboard or personal watercraft. While lovely seashells adorn all of these beaches, the plentiful collection of shells found on Sanibel Island are known for their exceptional beauty. If you wake up early enough and look toward the beach, you’ll see people doing the “Sanibel Stoop” as they search for colourful gems washed in by the previous night’s tides.

If your taste runs more to shopping than shelling, you’ll find delightful items at great prices at the Sanibel and Miromar outlets. Also, both Fort Myers Beach and the Fort Myers River District have interesting shops offering great bargains.

When it comes to dining, you’re in the right place. The Bubble Room, perhaps America’s most unique restaurant, is a pink wooden fantasy shack where classic American food is served amidst what may be one of the world’s most eclectic collections of Americana. Other delightful local treats include the coffee and the maple bacon donuts at Bennett’s Fresh Roast, sweets at Norman Love Confections and rum at the Wicked Dolphin Rum Distillery.

Head outdoors to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge to explore Florida’s fascinating ecosystems and wildlife. The Great Calusa Blueway is among America’s most scenic kayaking/canoeing trails. Or take a dolphin-watching cruise and you may even spot a manatee or two.

Everywhere you look, people are having fun fishing, boating, paddleboarding and kayaking or just luxuriating on expansive beaches where a breathtaking sunset happens every evening.
