Martin County is one of those sweet spots that linger in your memory long after you’ve returned home.
About 180 kilometres up the Atlantic coast from Miami, this area is known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World” and it won’t take you long to understand why.
Martin County’s renowned for its pristine natural beauty, boutiques and innovative culinary scene. Blessed with scenic beaches and tons of recreational opportunities, it’s a colourful, quaint piece of yesteryear that’s been lovingly preserved.
The county is anchored by the town of Stuart, named Coastal Living’s “Happiest Seaside Town in America” in 2016. Downtown Stuart has been restored to its original early-20th-century ambiance, and you can roam streets lined with quaint family-owned shops and galleries, atmospheric restaurants, and the beautiful old Lyric Theatre. Nearby, quiet, pretty towns like Hobe Sound, Jupiter Island and Palm City wait to be explored.
Don’t miss the Stuart Green Market, open Sunday mornings year-round, to admire the creativity of local artists and craftspeople on display, and to savour locally grown fruits and vegetables, home-baked goods, jams and spices.
Martin County also boasts a fantastic summer festival. The 30th Annual “Dancin’ in the Streets” festival will take place on August 19, 2017, and it always includes internationally known performers. The festival is a colourful, event-packed day of live musical performances, food, arts and crafts vendors, kids’ activities and, of course, dancin’ in the streets!
