A TRIBUTE TO GOLF

(2015 - Fall Issue)

Writer: EDWARD SCHMIDT JR.

From Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan to Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum at World Golf Village near St. Augustine, FLORIDA, showcases golf’s greatest players and personalities in an exciting interactive setting.

Combining visually impressive entertainment elements with cutting-edge design, the bright and airy 3,250-square-metre museum appeals to casual observers as well as golf fanatics. It encourages visitors to get involved through videos, photographs, memorabilia and a variety of participatory activities.

Walk across the replica of St. Andrews’ fabled Swilcan Bridge and you can take a keepsake picture. Play the Old Course at St. Andrews, Firestone Country Club and other historic courses on a golf simulator. Putt with hickory-shafted putters and gutta-percha balls on a replica 1880s-style putting green. Listen to a museum-wide audio tour featuring exclusive content from Hall of Famers like Arnold Palmer and Ben Crenshaw.

Special Exhibits

Stroll through the various exhibit halls and galleries and examine the amazing collection of artifacts, personal memorabilia and trophies and you’ll be rewarded with a one-of-a-kind historical perspective on the centuries-old game of golf.

At the Shell Hall, gaze at handcrafted bronze plaques of each of the legendary 150 members on a 27-metre-long Wall of Fame.

One of the more popular exhibitions is the Member Locker Room. Here, Hall of Fame members like Sam Snead and Gary Player have filled the richly appointed dark wood lockers with their professional artifacts and personal possessions. Brimming with favourite clubs, golf bags, photographs, hats and other items, the lockers provide a glimpse into the lives of the world’s best and most celebrated golfers.

For a spectacular panorama, the Trophy Tower, accessible by elevator, gives you a view from 60 metres above the Hall of Fame of the World Golf Village complex and surrounding area. Some of the sport’s most significant trophies are on display, including The Masters and Ryder Cup trophies.

You’ll be inspired by the tribute exhibitions, which include “Bob Hope: Shanks for the Memory,” “Honoring the Legacy: A Tribute to African-Americans in Golf” and “Nancy Lopez: Pride, Passion and Personality.” Recently introduced is the “Gary Player: Grand Slam Success” exhibition.

For family fun, enjoy everything from educational documentaries to Hollywood blockbusters at the World Golf Hall of Fame IMAX Theater, home to a 21-metre-wide and five-storey-high screen.
